CUBAN CONFLICTS
The Bay of pigs Invasion
Bay of Pigs is in the southern coast of Cuba. In April 1961 an invasion by the Brigade 2506, a group of Cuban exiles supported by the CIA, took place to overthrow the Cuban Prime Minister, Fidel Castro. Within three days of the invasion, the Brigade 2506 was defeated by Cuba's armed forces. This failed invasion made Castro stronger as a leader. He became closer to the Soviet Union. The Kennedy administration launched Operation Mongoose which was a plan to ruin the Cuban government and economy. The Bay of Pigs Invasion led to more distrust between the United States and Cuba.
cuban Missile crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred after the failure of The Bay of Pigs. During July 1962, there were 42 missile sites placed by Khrushchev (the leader of the Soviet Union) in Cuba. When the Americans discovered these sites President Kennedy established that all of the missile locales had to be demolished. The founding of the sites caused the U.S. to blockade Cuba, which meant that no goods or people could travel in or out of the country. The blockade would help prevent any more missile sites from being placed in Cuba. Since the U.S. were apprehensive about the missiles not being removed, and instead being launched, the United States set themselves up to invade. Khrushchev noticed what was going on and said that if the U.S. agreed to not invade Cuba, he would agree to disassemble his missile sites. After the Soviets removed the missiles, Cuba depended on the Soviet Union for help economically and socially. Once the Soviet Union split up the Cuban economy began to deteriorate and necessary goods and supplies were sparse. During this time Castro repudiated the ideas of renouncing his title, abolishing the trade embargo with the United States, and renovating the economic system. The situation worsened up to current times.
More on the blockade
The blockade in Cuba was used to prevent more missiles from being stationed in Cuba, as well as to ensure that the missile sites that were already in place would be removed. The blockade caused much tension between the Soviet Union and the United States. Many thought the blockade would lead to the start of a third World War, a nuclear war.
