Nicaragua: Timeline of events
1941-1948
Nicaragua joins in on WW2 after Pearl Harbor.
Recognized as a charter member of the U.N.
Joins organization of American States.
1960-1968
US mercenaries invade Playa Giron, Cuba and suffer the loss of the "Bay Of Pigs".
Somoza establishes a military autocracy.
Offers his national guard to fight in the war of Vietnam.
1971-1979
Earth quake kills 6,000 and Somoza embezzles money from relief fund.
Martial law is declared and U.S. marines are sent to ensure institution of Somoza's regime.
Anti-Somoza forces launch attack against military.
Somoza leaves office and soon after Nicaraguans celebrate their victory.
1980-1988
Somoza is assassinated.
Social programs created to help gain literacy, health care, education, child care, and land reform.
As Nicaraguans strive for independence america fuels the Contra war.
Political control now a junta.
Daniel Ortega takes office, declares state of emergency, and the Iran Contra affair begins.
Nicaragua is torn apart by the war and Hurricane Hugo. A truce is reached by the Contras and Ortega.
1990-1997
Chamorro is elected president and fixes diplomatic problems with the U.S.
Cuts money put toward successful Sandinista led social programs.
Land is distributed back to original owners after given to small farmers. This is felt across the nation.
Liberal Arnoldo Lacayo wins presidential election Daniel Ortega.
