What were the contras?
The Contras were a group created by the U.S. government. They were meant as a anti-Sandinista party and were seen as terrorists. The group was funded secretly by the U.S. government which technically is still violating the Boland Amendment. The Contras have been against the Sandinista government, which leads to a peace conference with President Daniel Ortega after Hurricane hugo's destruction in 1998. A UNO coalition president takes over named Violeta Chamorro in 1990.
The U.S. is funding the Contras, a terrorist group created to go against the socialist
Sandinista party. The U.S. is represented as the dressy man, the funding is the colonial outfit given to the Contra soldier. This makes it seem like the U.S. is funding and helping the Contra terrorist group which is what was secretly happening.
- The Contra were formed by exiles of the country. The tried to oppose the Sandinista reign and had been kicked out. They later on with the help of Jose Francisco Cardenal recently president of the Chamber of Construction, and Enrique Bermudez who was a colonel in the National Guard they were able to form the FDN.
- Anybody the Sandinista had angered or betrayed in any way were out to seek vengeance upon their old comrades and sought out the FDN to help them achieve their wishes and enlisted in it.
- The Contras were supported by many other countries including the U.S which disapproved of the economic politics of the Sandinista.
- Argentina assisted them with money and training for their soldiers, as did the U.S because they had already been helping out Honduran.
- 1981 Reagan had begun providing them with arms and other essentials for fighting against the Sandinista by helping Argentina back them up.
- President Carter then decided to have the CIA give some financial support to the groups fighting the Sandinista, by spreading propaganda and doing what they could without bringing physical harm to anyone. The CIA then met with the rebel leaders to discuss some matters as well as the other leaders supporting them. The CIA then could interfere with the giving of weapons to El Salvador, however they were unable to give the rebels any of the weapons. This was known as the Iran-Contra Affair.
